What are glyphs?
Glyph codes are Forerunner symbols that are imprinted on puzzle piece shapes that can be pieced together in a certain order to make an up to 10 digit code on the Halo waypoint forum (http://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/classified) - must be signed in.
They came about through various pre-release communications between 343i (developers of the game) and the fans, starting with the obvious one at the end of the Making of Halo 4: Infinity multiplayer video. These were then put into several more communications, each getting more difficult to find.

GLYPHS
ENCRYPTION USUALLY INVOLVES LOCKING A SET OF DATA BEHIND A SPECIFIC COMBINATION OF GLYPHS. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FORERUNNER SYMBOLS WHICH HAVE BEEN STUDIED BY ONI, IN THIS CASE WE LEVERAGE A SUBSET ALPHABET OF 37 GLYPHS.
THE GLYPHS THEMSELVES DO NOT HAVE A KNOWN LITERAL TRANSLATION TO ANY HUMAN LANGUAGE. HOWEVER, PREVIOUSLY CODE SEQUENCES HAVE BEEN CREATED THAT HAPPEN TO SPELL A PARTICULAR WORD OR PHRASE, IF YOU INTERPRET THE LAYOUT OF THE GLYPHS ON THE ENTRY PAD IN A CERTAIN WAY. IN GENERAL, THIS IS NOT COMMON PRACTICE AND MOST GLYPH CODE SEQUENCES DO NOT HAVE ANY LITERAL SPECIFIC MEANING.
ENCODINGS CAN VARY IN LENGTH FROM 1 TO 10 GLYPHS. FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, USING ANY LESS THAN FIVE IS NOT USUALLY DONE, AS IT WOULD NOT RESULT IN PROPER SECURITY FOR THE DATA. THE MAJORITY OF RECENT CODES DISCOVERED EMPLOY SEQUENCES OF 10 GLYPHS.
FINDING CODES
CODES CAN BE FOUND IN A VARIETY OF WAYS BY FIELD AGENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, PREVIOUSLY, SPARTAN 117 CAME ACROSS A SET OF CURIOUS TERMINALS WHEN FIGHTING HIS WAY THROUGH ALPHA HALO. EACH TERMINAL CONTAINED A VIDEO TRANSMISSION WITH INCREDIBLY VALUABLE INTEL. AT THE END OF EACH TRANSMISSION WERE SEQUENCES OF FIVE GLYPHS, WHICH IN TURN UNLOCKED ADDITIONAL INTEL AND RESOURCES TO IMPROVE THE SPARTAN PROGRAM AND EQUIPMENT.
MORE RECENTLY, CODES HAVE BEEN SPOTTED ON THE SURFACE OF REQUIEM. SPARTAN 117 DID NOT LOCATE ANY DURING HIS EFFORTS DIRECTLY, BUT SPARTAN OPS TEAMS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERING A FEW GLYPHS AS THEY CONDUCT THEIR OPERATIONS. IT IS RUMORED THAT THERE ARE SEVEN TO FIND, ONE EACH IN SEVEN OF THE LOCATIONS TARGETED BY SPARTAN OPS.
OTHER CODES CAN BE FOUND SOMEWHAT DISGUISED IN UNSC-WIDE TRANSMISSIONS. TO FIND THESE, LOG INTO ANY WAYPOINT CONSOLE, AND SEARCH FOR ARTICLES THAT CONTAIN EITHER GLYPHS, OR THEIR MENTION.
FINALLY, THE UNSC FORUMS AND BULLETINS ARE A FREQUENT SOURCE OF MORE SECRETS, ALTHOUGH MANY OF THEM ARE HIGHLY ENCRYPTED AND REQUIRE LARGE TEAMS OF THE ABSOLUTE TOP ONI OPERATIVES, IN ORDER TO DISCOVER AND DECRYPT THEM.
DECRYPTION REQUIREMENTS
IN MOST CASES, IT IS NOT ENOUGH FOR AGENTS TO LOCATE THE CODES TO UNLOCK THE DATA NODES. IN PRACTICE, THE ENCRYPTION MECHANISM IS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH TRIGGERS THAT REQUIRE SPECIFIC UNSC MISSIONS TO BE COMPLETED.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE ALPHA HALO ARCHIVE CODES, REQUIRED THAT SPARTAN 117 ACTUALLY ACTIVATE EACH OF THE TERMINALS LOCATED ON OR NEAR THAT HALO INSTALLATION.
LIKEWISE, THERE ARE RUMORS OF SEVEN NEW DOMAIN TERMINALS LOCATED THROUGHOUT REQUIEM. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME DATA MAY BE UNLOCKED BY FIRST ACTIVATING EACH OF THESE TERMINALS AND THEN LOCATING A SPECIFIC CODE.
